William Hoyte McEwan was born in Limerick, Ireland, and attested for the 25th Foot, July 1854. Initially employed as a Drummer, he quickly advanced to Drum Major, before being promoted Bandmaster Sergeant in October 1865. He was awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal in 1876, and exchanged it for the M.S.M. in 1879. He served as Bandmaster, October 1875 - February 1881. On the latter date he retired having completed 24 years and 278 days service with the Colours.
