Patrick O’Connell was born in Listowell, County Kerry, Ireland, and attested for the 39th Foot at Limerick, in October 1855. He transferred to the 32nd Light Infantry in January 1857, and to the 1st Battalion, 19th Foot in February 1859. He was promoted to Sergeant in August 1863, and was discharged 28 November 1876, having served 21 years and 36 days.
