James Spratt was born in Roxborough, Scotland, and attested for the 55th (Northumberland) Company Imperial Yeomanry at Newcastle, in January 1901. Having served during the Second Boer War, he was discharged at his own request, 12 March 1902. He joined the Regular Army, and served with the 1st Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment on the North West Frontier. He advanced to Colour Sergeant, and served with the Regiment during the Great War in the Gallipoli theatre of war, from 11 July 1915. Spratt was discharged due to wounds, 27 June 1916.
