Born Birmingham in November 1838. Joined as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. VICTORY on 9 November 1853. He was drafted to H.M.S. HASTINGS in February 1855, and as an Ordinary Seaman 2nd Class to H.M.S. NANKIN (ex TRANSIT) on 30 August 1857. He served aboard H.M.S. ESK as an A.B. from May 1863 until October 1867. Pensioned and granted his LS & GC rewards as a Quarter Master aboard H.M.S. EXCELLENT on 3 July 1875 with 20 years servitude. His Victorian Narrow Suspension LS & GC was one of the rare variety which recorded the man's service time (20 Yrs) on its edge.
