John Frederick Montague Phillips was born in November 1897, and was appointed Flight Cadet in the Royal Air Force, in July 1918. He was commissioned Temporary Second Lieutenant in September 1918, and carried out training at Roehampton and Cranwell before being posted to R.N. Airship Station Howden. He gained his R.A.C Airship Pilot’s Certificate (No. 61, out of just 67 awarded), 24 July 1919, and relinquished his commission in October of the same year. He re-engaged for service during the Second War as a Second Lieutenant in the Army, in June 1941.
