William Puckridge was born in London in 1870 and attested for the Devonshire Regiment there on 5 March 1889, having previously served with the 3rd Battalion Royal Fusiliers. He served with the Devonshires in India from October 1890 until January 1897, before transferring to the Army Reserve in February 1897. He was recalled to the Colours on the outbreak of the Boer War on 7 October 1899, and served with the 2nd Battalion in South Africa from October 1899 until January 1900, being severely wounded at Colenso on 15 December 1899 (listed as ‘Puckbridge’ in the latest published casualty roll). He was discharged at home on 4 March 1902.
