Posted to the 1st Battalion, he served in South Africa, Mauritius, and India from June 1893 to February 1899, and transferred to the Army Reserve on 5 February 1899. He was recalled to the Colours on the outbreak of the Boer War, and was wounded in Natal, 22 February 1900. Jacques was one of 14 men of the regiment wounded in action on that day at Hedge Hill, on the north bank of the Tugela River, prior to the final relief of Ladysmith.
