James Malcolm was born in St. John’s, New Brunswick, on 26 December 1896, and attested there for the 26th Battalion, Canadian Infantry, on 26 November 1914. He arrived in England on the S.S. Caledonia on 24 June 1915, and served during the Great War on the Western Front from 15 September 1915. Whilst taking part in an attack east of Mouquet Farm, Courcelette, on the afternoon of 29 September 1916, he was hit in the head and other parts of the body by shrapnel from an enemy shell, and was instantly killed. He has no known grave, and is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial, France.

Sold together with a newspaper cutting announcing his death, which contains a photograph of the recipient, and copies of the recipient’s service papers.

Alexander Troup was born in Kintore, Aberdeenshire, on 29 April 1887, and having emigrated to Canada attested for the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force on 28 September 1915, having previously served in the British Colombia Horse. He served during the Great War on the Western Front from 1 March 1916, as a Signaller with the Canadian Railway Troops, and suffered a gun shot wound to the right arm on 15 August 1917. Hospitalised, he returned to Canada on 13 February 1918, and was discharged on account of his injuries on 14 March 1918. He died in North Vancouver, British Colombia, on 13 December 1977.
