East and West Africa 1887-1900, for Mwele 1895, no clasp (A. Smith, A.B., H.M.S. Racoon.) minor edge nick, about extremely fine £240-280

Alfred Smith was born in Ermington, Devon, on 24 August 1869, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 14 January 1885. Advanced Ordinary Seaman on 1 September 1887, whilst serving in H.M.S. Ready, he was promoted Able Seaman on 1 January 1888. He joined H.M.S. Racoon, an Archer-class torpedo cruiser, on 13 May 1894, and served in her during the Mwele campaign, July and August 1885. He transferred to the Coast Guard on 6 April 1900, and saw active service during the Great War (entitled to a 1914-15 Star trio). He was finally discharged on 28 June 1919.
