Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 4 clasps, Belmont, Modder River, Driefontein, Transvaal (1071 Pte. J. Mc’Neill, Cldstm: Gds:) suspension claw slightly loose, extremely fine £120-160

John McNeill was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1873 and attested there for the Coldstream Guards on 14 September 1897, whilst currently serving with the 1st Newcastle Volunteer Reserve. He served with the Coldstream Guards in South Africa during the Boer War from 28 October 1899, and was present at the Battles of Belmont, 23 November 1899; Modder River, 28 November 1899; and Driefontien, 10 March 1900. He returned to the U.K. on 20 July 1902, and was awarded a War Gratuity of £6 15s for his service during the Boer War. He transferred to the Army Reserve on 7 October 1902, and was discharged on 13 September 1909 after 12 years’ service. He was subsequently employed as a Foreman by the Newcastle-upon-Tyne Municipal Corporation.
