M.I.D. London Gazette 13 December 1966. ‘In recognition of gallant and distinguished conduct in the Borneo Territories during the period 24th December 1965 to 23rd June 1966’.

Private Frank John Ayling, 2 SAS Squadron, was awarded the M.I.D. for attempting to save other members of his recce patrol who were drowned during a river crossing. Ayling saved one man but the patrol commander and one other soldier were drowned. One of only two awards to the Australian SAS for Borneo.
