The 1922 pennies in this and the following lot were acquired by the late owner in a handwritten envelope, inscribed: “Two 1922 (new) pennies presented to me by the Bursar of Magdalen College, Oxford at the Court held at Selborne, May 1st 1923. No 1923 coins have yet been minted, hence their being 1922 ones. In 1925 all copyholds will be abolished by act of Parliament & [therefore] these pennies will become unique. May 2nd 1923”
