Provenance: Bt. 1976

Ivanhoe Joselph Mordecai (1855-1923), b. Kingston, founded his business in Morant Bay about 1880. The business dealt in dry goods and hardware until about 1915 when Mr Mordecai retired and the business closed. The tokens were struck by Ralph Heaton and Sons Lt. Birmingham in July 1880 and again in Jan/Feb 1882 (this latter issue was 5000 pieces). It is presumed that the tokens were withdrawn in 1883 when Law 2 of 1883, dated 12 April, was passed which forbad the use of tokens
