Charles Reginald Bent Aked was born in Leeds on 13 April 1879, the son of Major Thomas Aked, and was educated at Haileybury College. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment, on 2 February 1898, and was promoted Lieutenant on 12 June 1899. He was commissioned into the Regular Army as a Second Lieutenant in the Lincolnshire regiment on 3 February 1900, and served with them in South Africa during the Boer War, including operations in the Orange River Colony, November 1900 to 1901, and in the Transvaal, August 1901 to May 1902. He was promoted Lieutenant on 30 November 1901, and resigned his commission on 3 February 1904.
Following the outbreak of the Great War he was re-employed on recruiting duties, and was advanced temporary Captain on 16 April 1915. He retired on 9 November 1917 due to ill-health, and died in Haslemere, Surrey, in 1948.
