Lewis Gillett served in the Kaffir Wars of 1846-47 and 1850-53 with 3/7th Battalion R.A., and was one of 3 gunners stationed at Fort Frederick, Port Elizabeth, 1847-53. He afterwards served in the Crimea with 2/8 Battery from October 1855 to January 1856 (Medal with Sebastopol clasp). He died of consumption on 20 February 1858.
