George Frederick Haywood was born in the Parish of Brighton, Sussex, and was attested for the 7th Dragoon Guards on 10 May 1833, aged 14 years 3 months. He was promoted to Trumpeter on 1 February 1838. He served at the Cape of Good Hope for 14 years 9 months, during which period he served with the 7th Dragoon Guards in the Kaffir War of 1846-47. Whilst at the Cape he transferred as a Private to the 6th Foot on 13 April 1848, being promoted Corporal the following day, and to Sergeant on 9 December 1848, and served with the 6th Foot in the Kaffir War of 1850-53. He was discharged at Chatham, unfit for further service, on 3 August 1858, and was awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal with a Gratuity of £15 on 5 December 1860. Sold with copied discharge papers.
