Snowden Davison was born at Northallerton, Yorkshire, and enlisted into the 2nd Queen’s Regiment at Newcastle-upon-Tyne on 25 August 1845, aged 18 years 7 months, a husbandman by trade. He served abroad at the Cape of Good Hope for 7 years 5 months, taking part in the Kaffir War in 1851-53. He was discharged at Chatham on 31 May 1859, in consequence of ‘chronic disease of the left knee.’ Sold with a 2nd Foot pewter tunic button salvaged from the wreck of the Birkenhead and some research.
