George Duncan was born at Gilcomston, Aberdeen, and attested there for the 91st Foot on 21 March 1840, aged 14 years 8 months. He served at the Cape of Good Hope for 14 years, and in the East Indies for 3 years 3 months. Having served with the 91st Foot in the Kaffir Wars of 1846-47 and 1850-53, he went with the regiment to India, where he transferred to the 73rd Foot and served during the Indian Mutiny with Brigadier Rowcroft’s Force. He was discharged Free to Pension at Aldershot on 6 September 1864, being then ‘in possession of three Good Conduct Badges, and has the Kaffir War and Indian Mutiny Medal - He has 6 entries in the Regimental Defaulters Book and has been three times tried by Courts Martial.’ Sold with a 91st Foot pewter tunic button salvaged from the wreck of the Birkenhead, and copied discharge papers.
