Four: Captain Thomas Kains, 3rd Foot

Punniar Star 1843 (Lieutt. T. Kains H.M. 3rd Regt.) with adapted silver bar suspension; Crimea 1854-56, 1 clasp, Sebastopol (Captn. Thomas Kains 3rd Buffs) regimentally engraved naming; China 1857-60, 1 clasp, Taku Forts 1860 (Capt. T. Kains, 1st Bn. 3rd Regt.) officially impressed naming; Turkish Crimea, Sardinian issue (Capt. T. Kains 3rd Regt.) fitted with ‘China’ type suspension, all fitted with silver ribbon brooches or buckles, light contact marks, otherwise nearly very fine or better (4) £1,200-£1,500

Thomas Kains was appointed Ensign in the 3rd Foot, by purchase, on 29 November 1839; Lieutenant, 20 May 1842; Captain, 15 May 1855; Instructor of Musketry, 13 August 1856; Major, 9 August 1863; and retired by the sale of his commission in 1865. Major Kains was present with the Buffs at the battle of Punniar (Medal). Also at the siege and fall of Sebastopol from 3rd September 1855, and assault of the Redan on the 8th September (Medal and Clasp, and Turkish Medal). Served the campaign of 1860 in China (Medal with Clasp for the Taku Forts).

Note: A group of three medals, comprising Punniar Star, Crimea Medal, and Turkish Crimea Medal, similarly named to this man, is known to exist, and is in the National Army Museum Collection.
