William Plover was born in Ladywood, Birmingham. He attested for the 60th Foot at London in June 1876. Plover served as a Bugler with the 3rd Battalion in South Africa during the Zulu War, and was also present during the First Boer War in 1881. He subsequently served with the Battalion in Egypt (his number, still as a Bugler, is erroneously listed as ‘778’ on the Egypt Medal Roll), returning to England in June 1883. Plover transferred to the Army Reserve, 11 July 1883, having served 7 years and 32 days with the Colours. He died in 1898.
