Sydney Charles Smith was born in Faversham, Kent in May 1894. He served as pre-war Territorial with the Kent Cyclist Battalion, and continued to serve with them when they were re-formed as a non-cycling infantry battalion prior to departure for India in 1916. Smith stayed with the 1/1st Battalion in India, and served with them in Peshawar during the Third Afghan War of 1919.
Having advanced to Acting Sergeant, Smith was discharged 31 March 1920. He later resided at 62 Upper Grosvenor Road, Tunbridge Well, before moving to Farnborough, Hampshire. Smith was employed as Accountant and Chief Financial Officer for Farnborough Council, and died in Bournemouth aged 101 in 1995.
