Donald Campbell Cowie was born in Glasgow in May 1901, and joined the Royal Navy in September 1925. He subsequently served at R.N.V.R. Clyde, advanced to Chief Engine Room Artificer, and served with H.M. Tug Buccaneer during the Second War (awarded L.S. & G.C. in August 1940).
