South Africa 1877-79, clasp, 1877 (Pte. D. S. Caithness, P.A.G. Rifle Vols.) the clasp is a tailor’s copy, otherwise good very fine and very rare £800-1000
Confirmed on the roll of Prince Alfred’s Guard Rifle Volunteers for the rare ‘1877’ clasp. Approximately 165 clasps in total are shown on the medal rolls for the small number of Colonial troops who served in 1877 only, against the Gcalekas and Gaikas, but a good number of these were returned to the Mint unissued. It appears that approximately 110 medals with this clasp were actually issued.
