Sergeant Clifford William Hamlin was born in Exeter in October 1914 and a Butler in “Private Service” prior to enlisting into the Territorial Army in April 1939. Originally a Rifleman in the London Irish, he was posted to the Royal Ulster Rifles in November 1939, subsequently transferring to the 4th East Yorkshire Regiment in December 1940. He saw extensive service in the Middle East between April 1941 and August 1943 and was M.I.D. for Italy while with the B.N.A.F.
