Robert James Monk was born in Little Waltham, Essex, in 1896, and attested for the Essex Regiment at Chelmsford. He served with the 11th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 4 October 1915, and was killed in action on 15 September 1916 during an attack north west of Leuze Wood, on the Somme.

Captain S. C. Scott wrote to Monk’s parents: ‘He was one of my best bombers and he was very sound through and through, and a very brave boy. The world is the poorer for the loss of a life like his.’

Monk is buried in Combles Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
