Ernest Percy Fry was born on the Isle of Wight on 15 July 1894 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy Servant on 1 November 1910. He served during the Great War as an Officers Steward, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 19 September 1927. He was advanced Chief Petty Officer Steward on 25 January 1934, and was shore pensioned on 9 September 1934. He was briefly recalled for service during the Second World War, serving in H.M.S. Dolphin from 31 July 1939.
