James Gostelow was born in Holybourne, near Alton, Hampshire, in 1864 and attested for the Hampshire Regiment in Winchester on 16 February 1883, having perviously served in the Regiment’s 3rd (Militia) Battalion. He served with the 1st Battalion in India and Burma from 9 January 1886 to 1 March 1893, and was advanced Colour Sergeant on 23 January 1892. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal per Army Order 163 of 1901, and was discharged at Exeter on 15 May 1906, after 23 years and 90 days’ service; for the final three years of his service he acted as Instructor to ‘H’ (Cowes) Company, Isle of Wight Volunteers.
