Sir Stafford Northcote, 1st Earl of Iddesleigh, GVB, PC, FRS (1818-87); b London; educ. Eton and Balliol College, Oxford; private secretary to W.E. Gladstone at the Board of Trade, 1843; Conservative MP for Dudley 1855-7, Stamford 1858-66 and North Devon, 1866-85; Financial Secretary to the Treasury, 1859; President of the Board of Trade, 1866; Secretary of State for India, 1867; Governor of the Hudson’s Bay Co, 1870-1; Chancellor of the Exchequer 1874; elevated to the House of Lords, 1885; died suddenly at 10 Downing Street, 12 January 1887
