Edward Shaw was born at St. Pancras, London, on 28 July 1865 and attested for the Chatham Division, Royal Marine Light Infantry, on 28 June 1883. He served in Egypt and the Sudan from 16 September 1884 to 16 May 1885, and was discharged on 30 July 1895. He subsequently enlisted in the Royal Marine Reserve on 4 July 1904, and was finally discharged, medically unfit, on 4 February 1913.
