David Bell was born in 1896 and served with the Army Cyclist Corps during the Great War on the Western Front from 21 November 1914, arriving just in time to qualify for a 1914 Star. He also served with the Scottish Rifles with Service No. 25560. He transferred to the Royal Air Force and trained as a pilot, being commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Royal Air Force on 28 February 1919.
