John Bufton was born at Pennybont, Builth Wells, Radnorshire, in November 1866, and enlisted at Newport, Monmouthshire, in January 1887. He served in the Sudan Campaign of 1898 with 37 Field Battery, Royal Artillery, and is also entitled to the Khedive’s medal with Khartoum clasp.
