Patric Charles Eric Newbigging was born in May 1850 and went to R.M.A. Woolwich as a Gentleman Cadet in August 1868, from where he was gazetted Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery in August 1871. He served in the Bechuanaland Expedition under Sir Charles Warren in 1884-85 with the Mounted Rifles; served in the South African War in 1899-1900 in command of a Brigade Division, Royal Field Artillery, and took part in the operations in Cape Colony, south of Orange River (Medal with clasp). The Q.S.A. medal roll confirms his service in command of 28 Brigade Division R.F.A., the roll being signed by him at Woolwich in May 1901. Colonel Newbigging retired on 15 February 1902.
