Ernest Walter Finch served in the Zulu War of 1879 as a Conductor with the Commissariat and Transport Staff (Medal with clasp). He took part in the operations in Basutoland in 1881 as a Lieutenant in the Transvaal Horse (Medal with clasp), and in the Bechuanaland Expedition of 1884-85, for which no medals were granted. In 1906, he is shown as a Captain in the 2nd Kent R.G.A. Volunteers, and at the outbreak of the Great War was commanding 4th London (Howitzer) Brigade R.F.A., at Lewisham. He served in France from early 1916 and is entitled to the British War and Victory Medals.
