Alexander Beattie was born circa 1855, enlisted in the 93rd Highlanders in 1873, and was promoted Quartermaster to the 2nd Battalion on 27 February 1895, at the age of 39 years. He served with the 2nd Battalion in the Tochi Campaign of 1897 (Medal with clasp); and with the 3rd Battalion in South Africa in 1902 (Medals and two clasps).
