Frederick Oliver was born in Macclesfield, Cheshire, and enlisted for the Royal Artillery, from 2nd Royal Cheshire Militia, at Macclesfield on 23 May 1876. He served in India from December 1880 but his discharge papers do not record for how long, nor do they show when he transferred to the South Wales Borderers. However, he was discharged from the South Wales Borderers at Aldershot on 31 July 1902, having served 26 years and 70 days.
