I.D.S.M. (Recommended for an immediate award, downgraded to periodical), London Gazette, 25 November, 1943. 'On 29th April, on the Enfidaville front, the enemy launched a determined attack, heavily supported by mortars and medium artillery, which gained considerable initial success. The officers and section commanders of C Company were away at the time carrying out a recce for a night attack. C Company was ordered to advance, and this Rifleman at once assumed command of his section and led it fearlessly up an open spur which was being heavily shelled. Having gained a vital ridge, this Rifleman organised and disposed his men, moving about continuously under heavy fire with complete disregard for his own safety. On several occasions he was knocked over by shells bursting within a few yards of him. The initiative and military skill of this Rifleman were worthy of one with many more years experience. His courage and coolness were exemplary, whilst his dauntless leadership played a large part in stabilising the situation in this sector.'
