Captain Donald William Auchinbreck Campbell was killed in action in France and Flanders on 23 November 1914, whilst serving with the 4th Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment, attached to the 1st Battalion Sherwood Forresters.
The following detail is extracted from The Bond of Sacrifice, Volume I: ‘Captain Campbell was killed at Neuve Chapelle on the 22nd November 1914, in an attempt to recover the body of the machine-gun officer, which lay a short distance in front of his trench; he had made an unsuccessful attempt alone the previous night, and at daybreak tried again with two volunteers, one of whom also lost his life. He was mentioned for his gallant conduct in Sir John French’s Despatch of 14th January 1915.’
