D.S.M. London Gazette 15 September 1916: ‘For services rendered by Petty Officers and men of the Grand Fleet in the action in the North Sea on the 31st May-1st June 1916:- Chief Stoker Frederick Charles Smith.
The torpedo boat destroyer H.M.S. Porpoise was part of the 4th Flotilla and was engaged at Jutland in the night action. She was hit at the base of the after funnel by an 8-inch shell which did much damage, besides killing and wounding several men. The wheel and telegraphs on the forebridge having been demolished, and his ship lying stopped, Commander H. D. Colville went aft and had the after steering position connected up. The boilers were damaged; but the ship finally managed to limp home to the Tyne after falling in with the Garland and Contest on the way.
