Leonard Maurice Powell was born on 24 August 1894, and educated at Loretto School. He enlisted into a public Schools Battalion in August 1914, subsequently being gazetted to the 3rd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. He was killed in action near Ypres on 17 June 1915, whilst attached to the 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders, and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
The following is extracted from The Loretto School Roll of Honour: ‘...In May 1915 he joined the 1st Battalion in Flanders (8th Infantry Brigade, 3rd Div.), near Hooge, in the Ypres Salient, where he was killed by a shrapnel shell on June 18, 1915.’
