Bryan Hill Townsley was born on 13 July 1894, and educated at Worksop College. On the outbreak of war he was in living in Vancouver, and immediately joined the 16th Canadian Infantry. He was commissioned into the West Yorkshire Regiment and served for some time in Gallipoli, before being transferred to the Western Front. Second Lieutenant Townsley was killed in action on the Somme on 14 September 1916, whilst serving with the 12th Battalion, attached 9th Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment, and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
