D.C.M. London Gazette 28 March 1918: ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When, owing to heavy shelling, a construction train, with about 200 men, was cut off, the line being blown up, he immediately took on an engine, the crew of which had taken cover, and with the help of a Corporal, took three wagons of miners to the point of the break, thus permitting the track to be filled in and the train to be brought in.’
