William Basil Charles Bridge was born in 1874 and educated at Wellington College. He joined the H.L.I. Militia in 1894 and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the H.L.I. in 1897. He served with the regiment in the Malakand and Buner Field Forces and was present at the attack and capture of the Tanga Pass. Promoted Lieutenant in 1900, he was employed with the Mounted Infantry in the Boer War and received the Queen’s Medal with five clasps. Employed in the Egyptian Army 1904-06, he was promoted Captain in the H.L.I. in 1907. He retired in 1911. Returning to the service for the Great War, he served in Gallipoli and France, was twice metioned in despatches and awarded the D.S.O. He retired in 1921 with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. It is recorded on his M.I.C. that he was a King’s Messenger.
