George Joseph Power Goodwin was born in 1877 and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers in 1896, attaining the rank of Major in October 1914. During the Great War he served in Egypt, December 1915 to March 1916, and in France and Flanders, March to May 1916, and September 1917 to November 1918, and was wounded. He gained the rank of Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel in June 1919.
