An award for three punitive operations carried out in the course of 1899, namely the Bula Expedition, the Central Division Expedition and the Benin Territory Expedition, the whole under the command of Brevet Major C. H. P. Carter and Captain R. Gabbett.
Captain H. P. Gordon was attached to the West African Frontier Force from the 4th (Militia) Battalion, Connaught Rangers, in April 1896, and served variously with the Southern Nigeria Regiment and Niger Coast Protectorate Force over the next few years, gaining advancement to the local rank of Captain in August 1901. He was also actively employed in the Aro 1901-02 operations and in Southern Nigeria between 1903-04, when he commanded in the latter year a reinforcement of two other Europeans and 90 other ranks in the Asaba Hinterland, services that won him entitlement to the Africa General Service with three clasps. Whether his Medal was ever issued is another matter, for the appropriate roll lists him as ‘Deceased’.
