John Welsh was born in Newcastle-under-Lyne, Staffordshire and enlisted into the Grendier Guards in 1879. Serving in Egypt, he was wounded at Tel-el-Kebir, 13 September 1882. After being transferred to the reserve in 1885, re-attested for the Welsh Regiment in June 1886 under the name of John Mekin. Found to have made a false statement regarding any previous military service, he was tried by Court Martial, found guilty and sentenced to 3 months imprisonment in January 1887. Sold with copied service papers for both ‘Welsh’ and ‘Mekin’.
