Thomas Simpson was born in Little Ouseburn, near Knaresborough, Yorkshire. A farm labourer by trade, he enlisted into the King’s Own Scottish Borderers in May 1884. After his service in Egypt he fell foul of authority and was twice (in 1890 and 1893) convicted of striking a superior officer. Transferred to the Army Reserve in 1895, he was again convicted for some misdemenour. A year after his release he was discharged from the Reserve on 9 May 1899. Sold with copied service papers.
