Frederick Martin was born in Luton, Bedfordshire and enlisted into the Grenadier Guards in 1896, aged 22 years. He served with them in the Sudan in 1898 and South Africa during 1900-1902, for which he was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 8 February 1901). In the Great War he served in France and Flanders, and was wounded in the leg on 25 August 1914. Martin was commissioned in October 1917 and retired with the rank of Captain in 1920. He died in a motor accident in 1953. Sold with copied service papers and other research. Martin was the author of the book, ‘History of the Grenadier Guards (Abridged) 1656-1949’.
