‘A Silver Fire Medal to Mr Roland Whittington, for having, on 23rd February 1891, promptly gone to the rescue of a poor servant girl whose clothes had caught fire while was engaged in washing linen. Mr Whittington extinguished the flames, but the unfortunate woman was so dreadfully burned that she died in the hospital a few days later. Mr Whittington’s left hand was severely injured in effecting this rescue.’ (52nd Annual Report).
