Samuel Gusgott was born on 5 February 1884 at Meadwell, Kelly, Devon. On 25 January 1909 he joined the Devonport County Borough Police and was later in the amalgamated Plymouth City Police. During the course of his career in the police he was three times commended: on 16 December 1921, by the Justices for vigilance in arresting two men on enclosed premises; on 17 December 1924, by the Watch Committee for prompt action at a fire which prevented a serious conflagration and on 22 March 1927, by the Chief Constable for service at the Coal Strike in Glamorganshire. He was awarded the Plymouth City Constabulary Good Service Medal on 18 May 1931. Guscott retired from the force on 27 February 1935 and died on 25 December 1955.
