The Metropolitan Fire Brigade Bravery Medal was awarded to Fireman 4th Class James Pelley, for saving two lives at a fire at Villiers Street, Strand, on 10 December 1877. Two other firemen were awarded the medal for the same incident. Pelley was one of nineteen men who were presented with the medal at its first distribution on 6 May 1881.
